Walmart

SVW operates Walmart as a distinct channel rather than an extension of Amazon. Fulfilment options, pricing rules, item setup and content requirements differ materially, and transferred catalogues underperform.

Scope

SVW operates Walmart Marketplace catalogues for the group's brands and for a limited number of external mandates.

Walmart is run as a distinct channel rather than an extension of Amazon. Item setup is attribute-led rather than keyword-led, content specifications are stricter and enforced at ingestion, fulfilment is configured through Walmart Fulfillment Services or seller-fulfilled against a published delivery promise, and pricing is subject to parity rules that suppress items when breached.

Scope covers item setup and taxonomy, content and imagery to Walmart specification, fulfilment configuration, pricing and repricing rules, listing quality management, and advertising through Walmart Connect.

The channel

Walmart's marketplace carries roughly a twentieth of Amazon's United States third-party volume, with around a tenth of the seller density. Category depth is correspondingly lower, and the cost of establishing position in most categories reflects that.

Advertising follows the same pattern. Walmart Connect reached approximately $6.4bn in annual revenue, growing at over 40%, which is a mature enough inventory to be useful and an immature enough auction to be efficient.

Physical store integration is the structural difference. Store fulfilment, in-store pickup and shelf adjacency are available to marketplace items in ways no pure-play channel can replicate.

Approach
01
Item setup.

Taxonomy, attributes and category placement completed to specification rather than to minimum. Attribute completeness governs discoverability on Walmart in the way keyword relevance does on Amazon.

02
Content.

Titles, descriptions, imagery and rich media built to Walmart's published requirements. Content ingested below specification is accepted and then ranked accordingly.

03
Fulfilment and pricing.

Fulfilment method selected against margin and delivery promise. Pricing configured against parity rules across all channels the brand operates.

04
Operate.

Listing quality score monitoring, Walmart Connect campaign management, repricing, and item-level margin review.

Determinants of performance

Attribute completeness. Walmart's search relies on structured attributes. Incomplete fields reduce visibility irrespective of content quality elsewhere.

Delivery promise. Displayed delivery speed materially affects conversion and buy box eligibility.

Price parity. Prices above those offered on other channels trigger suppression. Parity has to be managed across every channel simultaneously.

Listing quality score. Walmart publishes it. It is the closest thing the channel offers to an explicit ranking input, and it is frequently unmonitored.

Common failure modes

Catalogues exported from Amazon. Content optimised for keyword relevance underperforms against an attribute-led index. Item setup requires rebuilding rather than transferring.

Incomplete attribute fields. Optional fields are treated as optional. They function as ranking inputs.

Parity breaches. A promotion run on another channel without adjusting Walmart suppresses the item, often without an obvious notification.

Under-investment in Walmart Connect. Auction costs are currently below those on comparable Amazon categories. That position is temporary.
